Twitter could be said to have reached critical mass in January 2009 when it was announced that membership had ballooned 752% in a year from 500,000 to 4.5m users (now 45m). Around the same time, a link was circulated (mostly on Twiter, natch) which pointed to HowToUseTwitterForMarketingandPR.com. On clicking the link, visiors see a single word, writ large: 'DON'T'
