NIKE / GRID

Postcode wars are heating up in London with Nike's latest running competition

Coming off the back of the hugely successful Nike+, Nike's latest venture challenges Londoners to race it out to the bitter end. However for this challenge, runners don't need to invest in smartphones, pedometers or even special Nike branded trainers.

Nike GRID uses the now almost defunct iconic London telephone box to track a runner's progress at designated Nike branded locations. After registering online, players run between two phoneboxes and punch in their unique user id number at each, logging their run and earning them points online.

The more runs, the more points earned for that postcode. The person with the most points in each area claims the crown of that postcode, badges are also awarded for speed, stamina and insider knowledge of the streets. There are 40 postcodes in play and four phoneboxes in each, players are encouraged to use their street knowledge to get them around their local area as quickly as possible by any possible route. There are also maps online and in various outdoor locations.

To celebrate the event, London grime artist Tempa T created a track to motivate runners pre-race. Produced by Skitz Beatz, the video featuring Tempa T performing the track is available to view on YouTube.

Nike GRID launches officially 8pm, Friday 23rd April and players have 24 hours to race and conquer their streets.

Nice idea, and could catch on. But being 2 days before London Marathon might rule out quite a few runners taking part. Shame, as looks like it might be another one of those little Nike ideas that could get big. Two weeks later, and you give us marathoners a new challenge to aim at......missing a trick?

Love the idea, but what if you get there, to the other phone box and someone's making a call? Bummer right?

Brilliant idea, but i agree with previous post. Why on earth didn't they think about the date? Counts me out, sadly. No marathon runners in Nike's marketing department, then?!

i think it's aimed at people who wouldn't normally be the kind to run marathons, but are keen to run and own their neighborhood streets. and if that's the case then the timing seems spot on.

Missing a trick? No way. Nike is on the money with the timings. Not everyone wants to train for 6 months to run over 26 miles - pick up and play - it's the way forward for the kids. Nice one Nike. I'll be ready at 8pm.

Absolutely love this. I'm not a marathon runner and this would be a great little variation on my training - which normally involves running from A to B with no objective. Hope they roll it out in other cities around the UK. Nike street adventures.

I think this idea could be the start of something really interesting, running that involves a gaming element could be a major motivator. It is clever, it gets kids off the streets misbehaving using their street wise skills turning it into positive action.

I would like to see how this could be explored after the two days are up in April. The game needs to continue though and that means it will have develop. This has a lot of scope to work for different people and abilities.

Think all these posts are missing something.. there are a lot more people running out there than just the folks who want to compete in marathons. I am an avid 5-10 k runner but not really interested in the marathons, maybe someday, but not now... This is a great idea!!! we have an inter-office pool going on to see who wins the office.. not just the street..

The October / November second outing of Nike Grd (over 15 days) rocks!

Today (Nov 1st) there are just 5 days till it ends and an epic battle is unfolding, with team "Just Run It" leading, "Team S.L.O.W" in second and "Team AudioFuel" in third.

This is a fantastic way to run, huge respect to Nike.
