SAATCHI & SAATCHI / NEW DIRECTORS SHOWCASE 2010

18 May 2010

Link-up with virtual animation studio Aniboom for the New Director's Showcase reflects how digital has revolutionised film-making and viewing

Saatchi & Saatchi and virtual animation studio Aniboom have created Nothing Is Impossible, a competition for 20-something filmmakers which will see one aspiring animator being granted a coveted spot in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at the Cannes Advertising Festival on Thursday 24 June. The winner will also collaborate with the ad network on a project later in the year.

Aniboom will promote the best submissions on its site, as well as on social platforms including YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The New Directors Showcase, which has been running for 20 years, reflects exactly how far digital film-making - as well as online film viewing and sharing - has shifted more centre-stage.

Richard Myers, creative director, global culture, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide, comments: 'There's been a revolution during the 20 years of the New Directors Showcase in the way that films are made, shown and shared. Aniboom, with its online community of animators, is a pioneer in this new landscape, and, as the showcase exists to spotlight the new, our partnership with Aniboom is a natural development.'

Tom Eslinger, Saatchi & Saatchi's worldwide creative director digital, says: 'We really liked Aniboom because not only do they have commercial nous, they also have a really open way of looking at animation. If you look at the first 75 entries on the site, at least half are where someone has made a film and then manipulated it, extending back to Radiohead's In Rainbows (featured on the cover of Contagious 16, pictured).

He adds: 'Aniboom has a high level of quality and diversity, and is completely transparent: what you see is what we're viewing for the contest. Rather than being a stodgy old ad agency watching reels submitted by production companies, we're trying to open it out by using different channels, inviting discourse about the work.'

From late June, viewers will be able to help select a People's Choice from a shortlist of entries, drawn up by Saatchi & Saatchi's Worldwide Creative Board. Watch last year's winner, Dennis Liu's promo for Again & Again, by Bird and the Bee, above.

Over the last two decades, the New Directors Showcase has been quick to identify such talented directors as Fredrik Bond, Nicolai Fuglsig, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Danny Kleinman, Traktor and Ivan Zacharias.

If you're in Cannes this year, arrive in plenty of time for the Showcase, which starts at midday on Thursday 24 June. Eslinger promises something 'odd and wonderful' at the event itself. Don't miss it!
