THE FOOD & BEVERAGE AWARDS / 2010

25 May 2010

Contagious' pick of the winners from the recent awards show

The BBDO network dominated last night's Food & Beverage Awards (FAB) at the Hurlingham Club, the quintessentially English oasis that borders the River Thames in Fulham. The agency's Toronto office won the inaugural Grand FABulous Award (best in show) for its 'Arctic Sun' stunt for Tropicana that saw a giant artificial sun being erected in the remote Canadian town of Inuvik.

This sudden burst of light interrupted 31 consecutive days of darkness and attracted hordes of curious local, endorsing the juice brand's claim that 'brighter mornings make brighter days.' BBDO New York scooped numerous nominations and prizes for its work on AMP, Starbucks and Snickers, with the clear audience favourite being the Snickers 'Road Trip' commercial featuring cameos by Aretha Franklin and Liza Minnelli.

Meanwhile, BBDO Proximity/Canada collected a Social Media FAB Award for its Doritos Viralocity contest, while BBDO Dusseldorf's Edible Encyclopedia for Bayer Vital was awarded best concept in the Direct Marketing category. AMV/BBDO London was nominated for a Doritos cinema spot in which a disillusioned music wannabe recaptures his inner Jimmy Page thanks to the snack brand's Guitar Hero promotion.

In the Contagious-sponsored Integrated Campaigns category, gongs (well, white plates actually) were handed out to: Leo Burnett Chicago for its Plant A Seed community sports initiative for Kellogg's; Leo Burnett Serbia for its bizarre 'Guru Jafforidza' campaign for Jaffa biscuits and Ogilvy New York for its hilarious 'Palace of Light' series for Shredded Wheat ('we put the 'no' in innovation).

Top prize in the Social Media arena went to We Are Social's Marmarati campaign, featured in Contagious 22.

Highlights of the Packaging Design winners included the Marmite XO commemorative pack, designed by Core London, some mischievous art direction for Vilpuri baked goods by Hasan & Partners in Helsinki and Kraken Rum by Strabger & Stranger, London. The FABulous Award in this category went to Turner Duckworth for its Winter Olympic-themed Coke cans.
