The cover is pictured above. Doesn't look like much, you might think - an ordinary barcode, with the obligatory splash of
Contagious colour and a cheeky logo sneaking out from underneath.
And indeed it is an ordinary barcode. But it's what we've attached to the ordinary barcode that's special....Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to
stickybits. Either an exciting new media opportunity or a gateway drug to total anarchy. You decide.
Here's how it works. You download the stickybits app to your
iPhone or
Android phone. Then, when you hover over the barcode with your phone, you're given the option to add a piece of film, image or text to that item - and every other item that bears that barcode. Not only is that message then streamed to the leaver's social networking profile, it's also immediately visible to other people using the app and leaving their own content. This means that every item on the shelf is a potential media channel for content, user-generated or otherwise.
In this case, the content is
Euro RSCG London's beautiful new campaign for
Dulux, a two minute explosion of colour that downloads straight to your phone within seconds of scanning the barcode. Neat, huh?
The Contagious Team will be all over Cannes this year attacking attendees with their own stickybits in order to create content streams around each and every point of content. Taken a cool picture you want to share with all and sundry? Attached it to a stickybit, and slap it on your T-shirt/flyer/head. Want to propose marriage to someone, but just too shy? Add a stickybit with your proposal to their glass of rosé, and then wait for their feedback.
We're having all sorts of fun playing with this exciting new technology, and hope you will too.
See you on the Croisette...
