Contagious made our way over to Old Spitafields Market for an afternoon of inspiration from the youngest members of the global advertising and design community at the annual
D&AD Student Awards. Whilst sipping Pimms we were treated to an array of talent across the categories of illustration, advertising, communication, packaging and more.
The event was sponsored by brands and agencies including
Doritos,
LBi and
IKEA with each company setting a challenge for the students to meet. For 2010, the number of entries reached an impressive 3050 from 41 countries across the globe.
The Student of the Year Award went to
Jessica Reynolds and
Serena Wise of
Kingston University who also picked up the top pencil in their category. Their project was in answer to the open brief set by
IKEA to 'inspire a wave of boundless change in peoples' homes by promoting the new IKEA catalogue'.
A little known fact is that the IKEA catalogue is the third most distributed piece of print material in the world following the
Bible and
Harry Potter. So how exactly do you re-imagine one of the mot popular books in the world?
Reynolds and Wise told Contagious that they first looked at how people shop at IKEA and noticed that colour played a major part in their purchasing decisions. Their answer is the IKEA Spectrum, a colour wheel representing every IKEA product categorised by its hue. As practical as it is beautiful, shoppers can browse online; zoom in and out for product details, as well as compile 'swatches' of products by dragging and dropping a selection to decide what works best.
D&AD education chairman,
Greg Quinton said of the project: 'Organising the site by colour and product not only creates an elegant navigation system but makes the product the hero. It helps with cross selling and importantly brings back fun to the brand'.
