The Curfew game guides the player through a compelling tale set in a 2027 British authoritarian state where second class citizens are placed under strict curfews. The storyline is based on the fact that currently curfews exist in over a thousand towns and cities across Britain for anyone under the age of 16 after 9pm.
The game plays out over a single night where users must navigate their way through four levels of game-play. The character controlled by the gamer must engage with four people throughout the night. Through a series of flashbacks, question times and single player tasks the player can build up their citizen ranking and earn the trust of their four fellow lodgers with the ultimate goal of entrusting one of them with important files which will damage the government if leaked.
The game was written by international game critic, journalist and Marvel writer, Kieron Gillen who worked previously on comic characters Thor and Iron Man among others. It features an impressive cast with previous experience ranging from Hollyoaks to Ugly Betty. Creative agency LittleLoud Studios, Brighton took on the design and production of the project following the success of their previous Channel 4 Education game, Bow Street Runner.
Alice Taylor, commissioning editor, Channel 4 Education comments: 'So many civil liberties and freedoms have been outlawed, piece by piece, in recent years: it's no wonder we're told so many young people are disaffected by politics and politicians. We hope The Curfew will help inspire young people to become more involved in society and politics'.
After playing for just a short time, it's plain to see that the game is excellent and blows our minds with the level of complexity and depth that the creators have been able to capture. It feels fresh and in-line with similar interactive dramas such as Heavy Rain which teenagers actually fork out their pocket money to play... a pretty mean feat for what is ultimately an educational game.
