Story

Good storytelling is central to good advertising. That's why we're joining our good friends at Organic who are bringing The Moth, a non-profit dedicated to celebrating the art of storytelling, to bring you an exceptional event during this month's Advertising Week in New York City.

Six industry luminaries will join an eager group of audience participants to tell their best war stories under our simple theme: The Worst Day in Advertising.

Personal and professional humiliation, clients won and lost, careers made and brought to the teetering brink of extinction: these will be the themes moving through the evening. It's all about sharing and self-deprecation in the name of fun. As the videos above show, courtesy Organic and friends, we expect the evening to veer into strange territory at some junctures.

The StorySLAM format is simple: five minutes, no notes, no stand-up comedy routines, rants or essays.

Moth stories range from the funny and profane to the deadly serious and heartbreaking, of which there is surely plenty of fodder in our fine industry. For a good example, here's Gabrielle Selz's winning story from a recent StorySLAM in New York.

In addition to sponsoring the event, Organic is using its ThreeMinds blog to follow along live, and host videos of the stories afterwards.

Confirmed participants include Barton F. Graf 9000 founder Gerry Graf, Cramer-Krasselt, New York general manager Anne Bologna, Ernest Industries' Ernest Lupinacci, Saatchi & Saatchi CCO Con Williamson, former McCann New York chief creative officer Joyce King-Thomas, Leo Burnett's North American CCO Susan Credle, Amalgamated, New York's Eric Silver, Organic chief creative officer Conor Brady and our own Nick Parish.

So come out, and bring your best story and volunteer for the telling. To sweeten the pot, the best volunteer-told story in The Moth's old school fashion will win a decidedly new school storytelling device courtesy of Organic: an Apple iPad.

Advertising Week delegates can register for the event through the Advertising Week site; for more information email Nick.

Let's hear your best stories of The Worst Day in Advertising!

It’s interesting that the associated print piece (assumedly by Organic as the event sponsor) identifies Organics own blog “Threeminds” as “the industries premiere digital marketing blog”. Interesting as such self-aggrandizing, expressions of vanity in the social world typically are met with harsh criticism. This raises an existential question: When you celebrate yourself online, are you a willing participant in a brave new social future, or are you just being an ass? Does Organic really believe “Threeminds” is actually “the industries premiere digital marketing blog”? Honestly? With all due respect as I'm sure there's oodles of untapped genius over at Organic - but really what have they done in the last ten years (other then being in the right place at the right time)?

Methinks they drank far too much of their own Kool-Aid.

An agency using mild hyperbole to make its claims? Shocking! Shocking!

Threeeminds is a pretty sweet blog--we're glad to see the smart folks at Organic put a new load of effort into it, and excited to be working with them on this event.
