In what resembles a large-scale science fair project, Tropicana harnessed the energy from oranges to produce a naturally illuminated billboard, demonstrating the natural energy in Tropicana juice.
The citrus-powered advert was created by
DDB Paris and London production house
Unit9, who attached 2,500 oranges to two big slabs of wood fitted with thousands of zinc and copper spikes. The acidic juice of the fruit dissolved the metals, causing their electrons to react with each other and produce an electrical current, like a giant battery. The current then powered a neon sign that read, 'Natural Energy.' The
Johnny Hardstaff-directed film above provides a longer look at the science of the process and the end result.
In keeping with the all-natural theme, the agency promised to recycle the oranges by composting.
